I took this photo from the top of the final pass of my Haute Route, on day 11 - Pfulwe Pass. Officially, this pass isn’t part of the standard Haute Route, but someone had recommended including it in my route, and it turned out to be the highest pass of the entire trek.
Being early June, the entire climb was still covered in knee- to waist-deep snow. Breaking trail all the way to the top was no easy task, but from the pass I was rewarded with an incredible view down into the Zermatt Valley and, in the distance, the Monte Rosa Glacier, seemingly suspended high above the surrounding peaks.
I took this photo from afar, and it might well be my favorite image from the entire trip. I rarely edit my photos in black and white, but this one really comes into its own without color. The contrast between the dark rock and brilliant white glacier brings out the shapes and textures of the mountain in a way that color simply didn’t.
