This is Glacier de Corbassière. Officially, it isn’t even on the Haute Route. The route I hiked in June 2026 runs from Chamonix to Zermatt, with several variations along the way. In one of the harder and more remote sections, I decided to take a detour - and while already on that detour, I took another one to cross an extra mountain pass instead of following the trail around the mountain.
I knew almost nothing about the pass, but decided to go for it. I slowly made my way up through the snow on the north side, with absolutely no idea what was waiting for me on the other side.
Reaching the top, it’s fair to say I was blown away. Glacier de Corbassière stretched out below me, surrounded by this enormous glacier-carved valley and rugged mountains in every direction. There wasn’t a breath of wind at the pass, so instead of immediately continuing, I simply sat down and had lunch while looking out over this beautiful natural wonder.
Sometimes the best places are the ones you never planned on seeing.
