The permit quota season had ended just two days earlier, so I didn’t need a permit. At the same time, it was the very start of autumn, and the leaves of the large deciduous trees had turned brilliant shades of yellow and gold, giving the valley an almost magical atmosphere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI took this photo in 2025 while hiking the Rae Lakes Loop, following Woods Creek toward the John Muir Trail. For me, a campsite needs to have a certain sense of coziness, but it also has to be visually special.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI took this photo while hiking the Rae Lakes Loop in the southern Sierra Nevada in 2025. I had hiked this area before on the John Muir Trail and already knew I didn’t want to camp at Rae Lakes. Beautiful as they are, they’re heavily used, and it can be difficult to find a quiet, pristine campsite.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eInstead, I stopped at Arrowhead Lake just below. I spent nearly an hour walking around the shoreline, scouting every possible campsite before finally finding this one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eLooking toward Glen Pass with the impressive Fin Dome towering above the valley, I pitched my tent here. As the sun slowly set, the wind completely disappeared, turning the lake into a perfect mirror.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eWithout a doubt, my favorite campsite on the Rae Lakes The giant I slept under had lost more than half of its base to fire. You could actually walk inside the trunk, yet it was still alive, its enormous canopy reaching high above the forest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe whole grove was covered in small sequoia cones, each only about twice the size of an acorn, yet capable of growing into the largest trees on Earth. Around my sleeping spot, tiny sequoia seedlings, no bigger than toothpicks, had started growing after the recent fire. The same fire that scarred this ancient giant had also given the next generation a chance to begin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThat contrast stayed with me throughout the evening.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eAs the sun filtered through the branches above, I found myself becoming unexpectedly emotional. Sitting beneath a tree that had likely been alive for well over a thousand years, I couldn’t stop thinking about how temporary we are, how fragile these forests have become, and how much beauty still exists in this world if we’re willing to protect it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThese trees have survived storms, fires, droughts, and centuries of change. Yet today, their biggest threat is us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eIt reminded me why I make these films. They can be more than entertainment. They can be a quiet reminder of what still exists, and hopefully inspire others to care about protecting places like this.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p3\"\u003eRemote, silent, and almost
