Madeira is often called the Hawaii of Europe, and I think this photo shows exactly why. Towering green mountains rise almost vertically straight out of the ocean, creating landscapes that hardly feel real.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the town of Seixal, which I passed through a few days into my trip. The peninsula almost looks like it simply flowed out of the mountains into the sea, creating this dramatic stretch of land.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeixal itself is a very small and charming town, with good food and a small grocery store where I picked up some resupplies before continuing my hike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo capture this angle, I had to fly my drone quite far out over the ocean, which was definitely a little nerve-wracking. But looking back, it was absolutely worth it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo this day, I still think this is one of the best photos I took on the island.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Harmen Hoek tip of Madeira, Portugal","description":"\u003cp\u003eIt was quite intense getting this photo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI hiked across the island of Madeira, and this was taken at the easternmost tip of the island, Ponta de São Lourenço. It’s a rugged, desert-like peninsula with steep cliffs dropping straight into the ocean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI hiked as far as the trail would take me and continued even farther beyond the main viewpoint onto the outer peninsulas. From there, I launched my drone and flew it several kilometers out over the cliffs and open ocean to capture the full series of peninsulas in a single photo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the battery slowly drained, I kept pushing the drone a little farther. Just a little more for a slightly better composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually, I captured this shot, but I was very close to not making it back with the drone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the return flight, a strong headwind slowed the drone down significantly while the battery kept dropping. I quickly realized I wasn’t going to make it back at that altitude. So I lowered the drone down toward the ocean and flew it close along the southern cliffs of the peninsula, using the terrain to shield it from the wind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuckily, it worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith the drone beeping loudly from the low battery warning, I managed to slowly bring it back up toward my viewpoint and land it located high on a plateau in Madeira. It is famous for its crooked trees, thick fog, and mysterious atmosphere, and when I passed through during my traverse of the island, it was exactly like I had imagined.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe twisted trees gave the forest an almost unreal feeling, while the sunlight occasionally breaking through the fog made the whole landscape feel magical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI decided to camp for the night on the edge of the forest beneath one of these massive laurel trees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSuch a beautiful
